30 hours free childcare reconfirmation deadline – 31 August 2019

Families only have until 31 August 2019 to reconfirm their eligibility with HMRC to ensure they are still eligible for autumn 2019. There are many families who still need to reconfirm; they can do this by logging in to their childcare service account.

You can review a parents eligibility status by logging into the early years portal to view your summer funding submission; this will detail each individual child’s eligibility dates and status. Please inform any parents who need to reconfirm as soon as possible.

For all new parents who may be eligible for 30 hours free childcare from September 2019, they also have a deadline of 31 August 2019 to apply for an eligibility code on the childcare choices website.

If a parent was issued a code over the telephone, the parent will need to reapply online when the time comes to reconfirm their eligibility.

If a parent has difficulties with reconfirmation, they should insist that an incident referral is raised with HMRC via their helpline; HMRC can be contacted on 0300 123 4097.

A one-page childcare overview poster has been produced that sets out all of the government’s childcare offers for parents, helping them to understand at a glance what support might be available to them and how the offers interact.

Community childminder project

Are you a childminder with a passion for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)?

Family Services Commissioning (FSC) is looking to recruit SEND childminders as part of the community childminder project.

The aim of the community childminder project is to have SEND childminders in each district who would offer free early education to families whose children have SEND.

During a recent survey with parents of SEND children, it was found that parents were more likely to take up their free early education if their provider had specialist training.

FSC would expect the SEND childminders to work closely with the early years specialist development centres (EYSDC), SEND family centre champions and parent champions.

FSC would expect you to undertake any relevant online training; any specialist training needed would be paid for by FSC.

Once we have an idea of the numbers of childminders interested, we will arrange a meeting to discuss further.

If you are interested and would like to find out more information about this project, please email karen.mumbray@hertfordshire.gov.uk

Life skills for little ones - starting school or nursery

Jane Mellor, early years librarian writes ‘Over the summer, many of you will be working with families who have children preparing to make the transition into new settings in September. It can be a time of great anxiety for both parents and children.

Hertfordshire libraries have plenty of picture books that can prepare children for this big change in their life and help to dispel any worries or fears they may have. Check out the titles attached which are all available to reserve from our website.

Don’t forget to encourage children to join the Space Chase which is this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. It is a fantastic way to help develop a love of reading as well as a great foundation for children starting school.’
